MONROVIA: Japan is set to provide JPY250 million (approximately US$1.6 million) in grant assistance to the Government of Liberia for the construction of a modern prefabricated infectious disease clinic at the J.J. Dossen Hospital in Harper, Maryland County, in a major boost to healthcare infrastructure in southeastern Liberia.
The project was at the center of discussions between the Embassy of Liberia in Japan and Mr. Keizo Inoue, Project Manager of TEC International, Inc., during a recent meeting at the Liberian Mission in Tokyo.
Under the arrangement, the grant will be provided to the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Health, which will serve as the implementing agency, while TEC International, Inc. will undertake construction of the facility.
The proposed clinic is expected to enhance Maryland County’s capacity to prevent, detect and respond to infectious diseases by providing dedicated infrastructure for the treatment and management of patients requiring specialized care.
During his visit to the Embassy in Tokyo, Mr. Inoue paid a courtesy call on H.E. Ambassador Edward Wade Appleton, Jr., where discussions focused on the implementation of the project and preparations for its commencement.
Mr. Inoue is expected to travel to Liberia in connection with the project as preparations advance for the construction phase.
According to the project timeline, construction is expected to commence between late March and early April 2027, marking a significant step toward strengthening Liberia’s public health infrastructure outside the capital.
The initiative forms part of continued cooperation between Liberia and Japan, with the grant expected to provide critical health infrastructure for residents of Maryland County and surrounding areas.
The construction of the clinic at J.J. Dossen Hospital is also expected to complement ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Health to decentralize essential healthcare services and improve the country’s preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks.
With Maryland County serving as a major population and commercial center in southeastern Liberia, the planned facility is expected to provide an important addition to the region’s healthcare delivery system once completed.
